So far this trip has been anything but smooth sailing. I am finally in London with a stuffed head and lack of sleep has caused me to go slightly delusional.
My flight from JFK –> London didn’t take off until sometime after midnight. I sat in the gate terminal for an hour before they boarded us on the plane to sit for another 3 hours. I was supposed to land at 8:00 a.m. in London (3 a.m. N.Y. time) and make my connecting flight at 9:00 a.m. That didn’t happen.
Instead, my flight landed at 12:30 p.m., so I obviously missed my connecting flight. No biggie right? Wrong. Heathrow Airport is massive. I walked for twenty minutes to the security gate only to realize that my passport was missing. Cue the waterworks. Every airport attendant I tried asking for help either ignored me or was blatantly rude. I searched my backpack, but sadly was without a passport or plane ticket. So what did I do? I cried. I cried on the moving sidewalk thingy to my Dad on Facetime because I was alone in a foreign country, without a passport, and being snubbed by everyone. Poor American me. If you think airline workers are mean in the U.S., I’d advise you not to communicate with them abroad.
The American Airlines woman who finally acknowledged me thought I was an idiot, and sent me walking for 20 minutes to retrieve my passport. But alas! It was found having slipped out of my backpack onto the airplane floor. With this small victory on my side, I couldn’t wait for my next flight. The same woman informed me that the next open connecting flight was at 5:20 p.m.
So now I wait and walk around the airport to kill time. In case you think I’m exaggerating about the size of this place–In the hour I’ve been here, I’ve managed to walk 2.83 miles. My exercise for the day is done!
Hopefully these bumps will all smooth out and will be something to laugh about. I just can’t wait to be in Barcelona and united with the family! Also, a shower would be nice.
