Isn’t the ultimate career goal to be so successful that you don’t have to sit in an office all day? Well then consider me at the height of my success because I don’t have to set foot in an office or classroom to sustain my living. Not really though.
Currently, I am working as a freelance writer and editor for whoever decides that I’m worthy enough to hire at the moment. I’ve always loved reading, and the passion for writing came later. In my junior year of undergrad, I crossed over from a Biology major on a pre-med route, who cried doing lab reports, to a pretty happy English major, who listened to 90s r&b to complete long essays. I stayed with English during my grad school, earned a Master’s of Science in Secondary English Education, and am now a NYS certified English teacher. Whaaaaa!
At this moment in life, I do not feel a strong pull towards teaching, so I’ve opted to go a more difficult route like many of the greats, and write. Also, since I’m living in England and can’t legally work due to visa restrictions, this is how I am supporting myself instead of watching or tutoring children, which means there’s a little more pressure to succeed. Every choice I make and job I apply to is all my own decision. I don’t have a boss to monitor me, a guaranteed paycheck, or someone tracking that I’m actually doing work on the computer and not googling french bull dog puppies…..I have to be my own boss!
While freelance work comes with perks, it also has its downfalls as well. I’ve come up with a list, so you people don’t just think I sit at home, painting my nails, and eating bon bons every day!
Freelance Pros
- Yeah okay, I can work in my pajamas and listen to Destiny’s Child all day.
- I can choose who I want to work for and what I want to write about.
- ^That means if my client sucks, I can just drop the contract and not put up with it.
- I can work literally anywhere, but I prefer coffee shops.
- I get paid for this!
- I don’t have to go into an office, wake up, or stop working at a specific time.
- I get to write and read, which are two of my favorite activities!
Freelance Cons
- There is no need to leave the house..EVER, which means human interaction is limited.
- Sometimes I am completely overwhelmed with work because I have unlimited reign to accept a bunch of jobs.
- Sometimes (one time) there’s barely any work to do, and then I feel useless.
- Sometimes the assignments I take on are boring as hell..like that one time I agreed to review household products…never again.
- I feel guilty for staying inside/at home and working all day.
